DNA My Dog Essential review
We may earn a commission from links on this page. It never affects the Sniff Score. How we score
Skip it. The company says it replaced its testing platform in 2024. We'll re-score when independent validation of the new platform appears.
Why this score is capped
Two independent checks raised accuracy problems: a peer-reviewed 2024 University of Colorado study and a 2024 WBZ investigation. The company says it replaced its testing platform in 2024. Our accuracy gate keeps the score at 4 or lower until that fix is independently verified.
What stands out
- Lowest price of any kit we cover
- Offers a test for dogs that have died, which others don't
What to know
- In the University of Colorado study it was alone in reporting 10–20% wolf ancestry in a purebred Bulldog and part Rottweiler in a purebred Beagle
- In 2024 it returned dog breeds for a TV reporter's human cheek swab; the company says the newer platform rejects non-dog samples
- 3.9 stars from 640 ratings on Chewy; 1.5 out of 5 from 33 reviews on Trustpilot
Buy it if
- We don't currently recommend it.
Skip it if
- Anyone who needs a result they can rely on, until the new platform is independently checked
Accuracy evidence
In a peer-reviewed 2024 study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, University of Colorado researchers sent cheek swabs from 12 registered purebred dogs to six direct-to-consumer companies. DNA My Dog reported the registered breed at 100% for 8 of 12 (67%) of the dogs.
| Test | Dogs | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Wisdom Panel | 12 of 12 | 100% |
| Darwin's Ark | 11 of 11 | 100% |
| Embark | 10 of 12 | 83% |
| DNA My Dog | 8 of 12 | 67% |
| Orivet | 7 of 12 | 58% |
| Accu-Metrics (ViaPet) | 0 of 9 | 0% |
The study tested purebreds only, so it can't tell us how well any test resolves a mixed-breed dog. It also didn't test health results. Read more in Are dog DNA tests accurate?

The Vet Check
Four questions about whether this report is useful in an exam room, answered from company documentation and owner reports.
About health results
A DNA health flag is a reason to talk to your vet, never a diagnosis. Many variants raise risk only a little, and confirmatory testing is the next step.
Common questions
Is DNA My Dog accurate?
Two independent checks raised problems: the 2024 JAVMA study (8 of 12 purebreds reported at 100%, plus wolf and Rottweiler results no other test supported) and a 2024 TV investigation where it returned breeds for a human sample. The company says its newer platform rejects non-dog samples.
Is DNA My Dog a scam?
We don't use that word. The evidence shows accuracy problems serious enough that we don't recommend it until the company's 2024 platform change is independently verified.
