Wisdom Panel Premium
The only test of the big two to report every purebred dog's registered breed at 100% in a peer-reviewed university study, plus a genetic consult when a health result comes back at risk.
Wisdom Panel Premium is our top pick. Embark Breed + Health is a close second, and Wisdom Panel Essential is the best value. We explain why two popular kits didn't make the cut, and why two more aren't scored yet.

The strongest independent accuracy result, the largest breed panel, and a genetic consult for at-risk health results.
Reported all 12 registered purebreds at 100% in a peer-reviewed 2024 study. Wisdom Panel Essential uses the same breed analysis.
The best-known relative finder, with owner-to-owner contact, plus 270+ health screens.
Premium's breed analysis and 25+ health tests for $95.99.
Embark's breed analysis and relative finder without paying for health tests.

The only test of the big two to report every purebred dog's registered breed at 100% in a peer-reviewed university study, plus a genetic consult when a health result comes back at risk.
Reported 10 of 12 purebreds at 100% in a peer-reviewed university study, screens 270+ health conditions, and has the best-known relative finder. A close second.
The same breed analysis as Premium for $32 less, with a short list of common health screens.
Embark's breed analysis and relative finder without the health panel.
The cheapest kit we cover, but two independent checks raised accuracy problems.
A detailed Life Plan report, but too few owner reviews to score, and it costs more than the leaders.
A big name with a 400+ breed panel, but no independent accuracy check and no retail reviews we can verify.
Every test is scored with the same published method, the Sniff Score. Accuracy evidence carries 30% of the score, and the best evidence available is a peer-reviewed 2024 University of Colorado study that sent 12 registered purebred dogs to six companies. Owner ratings, health-report quality, breed panel size and value make up the rest.
We don't test kits ourselves. A test needs at least 300 owner ratings to be scored, which is why Orivet and Ancestry show "Not enough evidence." For the full accuracy picture, read Are dog DNA tests accurate?, and for the two leaders head to head, see Embark vs Wisdom Panel.
On the best independent evidence, Wisdom Panel. In a peer-reviewed 2024 study of six tests on 12 registered purebred dogs, it reported every dog's registered breed at 100%. Embark did so for 10 of 12.
For breed ID, the major labs did well in that study, but tests disagreed more on secondary breeds, and mixed dogs weren't tested. Some cheaper kits have failed independent checks; see Lab Watch.
Wisdom Panel Premium scores 9 and Embark Breed + Health 8. Wisdom Panel had the stronger accuracy result; Embark has the better-known relative finder. See our full comparison.
Wisdom Panel Essential at $95.99. It uses the same breed analysis as Premium. We don't recommend cheaper kits on the current evidence.
Not reliably. A 2022 study of more than 18,000 dogs found breed explains about 9% of behavior differences.
Take it to your vet first. Many flagged variants raise risk only modestly, and a confirmatory test should come before any treatment decision.
No. DNA kits can flag a genetic tendency at most, and at-home hair or saliva allergy kits failed a 2018 study outright.
No. We read the published research, company documentation and owner reviews, and we show our sources on every page. We never claim hands-on testing.
